History

The Gredos San Diego Cooperative was founded in 1985 by 18 members.

In 1985, eighteen members, teachers and non-teaching staff founded the Gredos San Diego Cooperative. They acquired ownership of the school upon the retirement of its owner, Julio López Herrero. The history of the Gredos Cultural Centre, from which the GSD Cooperative originates, dates back to the 1950s. This centre was located on Avenida de San Diego. And this is where the cooperative’s name comes from: Gredos from the Cultural Centre, and San Diego from the street name.

Thanks to its strong presence in the neighbourhood, GSD is an inseparable part of the history of Vallecas, Madrid. Renowned figures from the world of culture and sports have studied in its classrooms.

GSD Cooperative manages eight schools in the Community of Madrid: the GSD Vallecas school (opened in 1994), the GSD Moratalaz school (September 2000) and the GSD El Escorial school (September 2003). GSD Las Rozas and GSD Las Suertes (in Ensanche de Vallecas) opened their doors in the 2007/08 academic year. That same year, an agreement was reached with the Educación Activa Complutense cooperative, resulting in GSD Alcalá. An educational centre with the same management model and educational project was subsequently built and opened. GSD Guadarrama joined the network in September 2008.

In 2013, GSD International School Buitrago became part of the GSD Community. This school is not only a centre for Primary, Secondary, Vocational Training (intermediate and advanced level), Baccalaureate and International Baccalaureate studies, but also a meeting point for different cultures, nationalities and languages: an international education institution. Spanish as a foreign language (ELE) classes are available under various programmes: from academic courses to short-stay programmes, as well as camps with students from different countries, and training for teachers in art or sports, etc.

In February 2018, GSD International School Costa Rica opened its doors: an important step in the internationalisation of GSD Cooperative, in a country with which the school has maintained a relationship of friendship and cooperation for more than ten years. GSD International School Costa Rica aims to be a centre with a global mindset, bringing together the best of Spanish and Costa Rican education, combining it with the experiences of sister schools around the world. In September of this year, GSD International School Pouma, Cameroon, was launched – a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project supported by the Abriendo Caminos and GSD foundations. This project allowed us to bring the GSD educational model to this country.

GSD Cooperative also has two Nature Classrooms that function as rural-tourism centres: La Vía Láctea-El Corralón (in Casavieja, Ávila) and Sendas del Riaza (in Valdevacas de Montejo, Segovia), the latter owned by the Fundación Patrimonio Natural (Natural Heritage Foundation).
